Abstrak Improving mathematics instruction requires substantial preparation in terms of designing teaching and learning materials and processes. In this paper we argue that such endeavor should pay attention to the way teacher develop a didactical situation. By using ‘didactical design research’ approach (Suryadi, 2013) as thinking tool, we explicate the notion of learning obstacle and trajectory on the volume lesson delivered by a primary teacher of GC school in Bandung. From lesson observation (February 2013), we analyse the feature of didactical situation based on the interactive function of mathematical representation and its corresponding students’ responses. Accordingly, we hypothesise alternative didactical situation of such lesson as we consider it would promote a higher mathematical thinking for students. Finally, we recontextualise Brousseau’s (2002) idea of action-formulation-validation situation based on our empirical findings.
